Good morning! Today I am going to talk about everyday miracles. You have most likely heard that Jesus performed miracles. There are stories of the many miracles of Christ Jesus recorded in the Bible.
The Oxford Dictionary defines a miracle as, “a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.”
The Gospel of John records seven miracles of Christ Jesus.
John 2:1-11 records the story of a wedding feast Christ Jesus attended where he turned water into wine. Jesus’ mother and disciples were there. Jesus’ mother told him they were out of wine. Jesus told the helpers to fill the 6 stone jars that were for purification with water. Then he told them to draw out some of the water and take it to the chief guest. The water had turned to the best kind of wine. They were surprised and called the bridegroom because normally the best wine is served first and the lesser wine is served later after people have been drinking. They told the bridegroom he had saved the best wine for last.
John 4:46-54 records the story of a servant of a king whose son was sick. He asked Christ Jesus to heal his son who was near death. “Jesus said to him, Go, your son is healed.” The man believed what Christ Jesus said to him and went away. He was met on his way by servants who told him his son was healed. When he asked what time it happened he realized it was the same time that Christ Jesus told him his son was healed.
John 5:1-15 records the story of man who had been sick for 38 years who was lying near a healing pool called Bethesda. The first person to go into the water after an angel stirred it would be healed. “Jesus saw this man lying down, and he knew that he had been waiting for a long time, so he said to him, Do you wish to be healed? The sick man answered, saying, Yes, my Lord; but I have no man, when the water is stirred up, to put me into the baptismal pool; but while I am coming, another one goes in before me. Christ Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your quilt and walk. And the man was healed instantly, and he got up and took his quilt and walked.”
John 6:1-14 records the story of Christ Jesus feeding five thousand people with 5 loaves of barley bread and 2 fish that a boy had brought with him. Jesus blessed the bread and the fish and it was distributed it to the people. They all ate as much as they wanted and when the leftovers were collected they filled twelve baskets.
John 6:15-21 records the story of Christ Jesus walking on the water through rough seas and strong winds to get to the boat where the disciples were scared they were going to drown.
John 9:1-41 records the story of Christ Jesus healing a man who had been blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground, mixed clay dirt with his saliva, and placed it on the blind mans eyes. Christ Jesus told him go and wash his eyes in the baptismal pool of Shiloha. The man washed and came out seeing.
John 11:1-44 records the story of Christ Jesus raising his dear friend Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha, from the dead after he had been dead for four days. Lazarus was in a burial cave and had been bound with burial clothes. Christ Jesus told Lazarus in a loud voice to come out and he did come out, still bound in the burial clothes.
Some sources say Christ Jesus performed 37 miracles and some say he did many more. John 21:25 says,”There are also a great many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, not even this world, I believe, could contain the books that would be written.”
Luke 5:12-14 records Christ Jesus healing a man who had leprosy. Jesus touched him and he was immediately healed.
Luke 5:1-9 records the story of Christ Jesus telling the disciples, after they had fished all night & caught nothing, to row out to the deep and cast their net, and they caught so many fish their net was breaking.
Matthew 8:23-27 records the story of Christ Jesus out in a boat with the disciples when a large storm threatened to sink the boat. Jesus stopped the wind and calmed the sea.
Many people, especially in the West, think that Christ Jesus was unique in being able to do miracles, but this is simply not true. In his book, Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda relates a story of Lahiri Mahasaya raising Sri Yukteswar’s friend, Rama from the dead when they were young men, after Rama contracted cholera and the doctors could not save him. Lahiri told Yukteswar to take some castor oil and put 7 drops on his dead friend’s lips. Yukteswar recounts, “I found my friend’s body rigid in the death-clasp. Paying no attention to his ghastly condition, I opened his lips with my right finger and managed, with my left hand and the help of the cork, to put the oil drop by drop over his clenched teeth. As the seventh drop touched his cold lips, Rama shivered violently. His muscles vibrated from head to foot as he sat up wonderingly.‘I saw Lahiri Mahasaya in a blaze of light,’ he cried. ‘He shone like the sun. ‘Arise; forsake your sleep,’ he commanded me. ‘Come with Yukteswar to see me.’ I could scarcely believe my eyes when Rama dressed himself and was strong enough after that fatal sickness to walk to the home of our guru. There he prostrated himself before Lahiri Mahasaya with tears of gratitude.”
Yukteswar said of the oil, “giving the oil had no meaning except that I expected something material and Lahiri Mahasaya chose the near-by oil as an objective symbol for awakening my greater faith. The master allowed Rama to die, because I had partially doubted. But the divine guru knew that inasmuch as he had said the disciple would be well, the healing must take place, even though he had to cure Rama of death, a disease usually final!”
Christ Jesus healed people of various physical ailments, often through touch or the laying on of hands. There are some Christian churches today that do laying on of hands healing. And there are many Reiki healers and other types of energy healers who use the energy of the Divine to heal. In Divine Science we have prayer Treatment where the Truth of the person’s divinity and their oneness with the Divine Source of all healing is acknowledged. The practitioner sees beyond the physical to the Spiritual Truth and affirms that the healing is already done in consciousness.
Christ Jesus’ motivation was love for people who were suffering. His compassion led him heal people, feed people, listen to them deeply, and offer healing words of forgiveness.
In John 14:12 Christ Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, He who believes in me shall do the works which I do, and even greater than these things he shall do, because I am going to my Father.”
Do you believe that you can be a conduit for miracles? If you know your oneness with God, Spirit, Source, whatever you want to call it, then you can!
At Community of Infinite Spirit we have some wonderful friends, Debbi and David Rosales, who live in McHenry, Illinois. They regularly do what they call, “God Jobs.” The key, according to Debbi and David, is to be open and listen to God. And, of course, you have to believe that it is possible for miracles to happen through your God inspired actions. When Jesus said, “He who believes in me shall do the works I do,” he meant the person who believes in and is willing to attune to the Christ consciousness that is available to all of us. If our life is grounded in our daily spiritual practices and we walk with God, as Christ Jesus did, then we, too, can be a conduit for what might be called miracles.
I am going to share several of Debbi and David’s everyday miracles with you. The first one is called:
From an Intuitive Hunch to a Miracle
By Debbi Rosales, McHenry, Illinois
A hunch is very persistent, and will not subside until you either ignore it or act upon it. It usually speaks in a still small voice and I also call it intuition or clairaudience. An example of this is a story from a summer vacation I took out west. My husband stopped for gas. While waiting I sat there looking up into a beautiful blue sky, feeling contented. As I did this, I heard a voice say, “you need to buy a lottery ticket.” I told God I don’t play the lottery. God said, “Well I have a good feeling about this one. It’s only a dollar.” So I got one.
That night I asked our hotel clerk to check the lottery results for us. He said, You have won $200. I knew there was a reason why I won, so I asked my husband to front me the money and I’ll stop and repay us on the way home when I turn the ticket in. 4 days later we were in Sheridan, Wyoming. My husband needed a new pair of jeans at Walmart. I sat outside the dressing room and saw a young man of 20 or so age hunched in a chair, covered in dirt, looking so tired. He said he worked in a coal mine and can’t seem to get ahead. I wished I could hug him, I felt so bad for him. He said his baby needed medicine, and his wife wants a dress. I asked, “Can your mom help?” He said, “No, she is a drinker.”
His wife came out of one dressing room and my husband out of another. Then again, I heard a small inner voice say, “He gets the money.” I was so happy to hear this. I ran to my husband, grabbed the cart, and said, “We have to find this boy, he gets the money.” We started running, pushing the cart down the aisles. We found the two of them at the pharmacy. I told him how God instructed me to buy a lottery ticket, and God said it was meant for you. I said, “Someone in heaven loves you and cares about you. Please take this $200. Do not feel bad because it only cost me $1.00 and listening to Spirit.” I said, “I am only asking that when you are successful, and I feel you will be, please pay it forward to someone else.” This gave my husband and I such joy.
But the story continues 2 years later. I was eating in the employee break room near Christmas. A coworker came in and said, “I had my radio on and heard a guy from Sheridan, Wyoming call in and said that a Chicago nurse said God told her to buy a lottery ticket. He was at a Walmart when it happened.” She told the story as it happened. But the best part to me is in the end he said when he knew the angels were there for him, he started paying it forward, just as the nurse had told him to do. Opportunities have come his way and now he is successful. I have always been worried about this guy and delighted he is thriving. I then closed my eyes and saw a lake. A pebble was thrown into it and when the ripple got to the other side, it then returned back to me. The voice said, “From Chicago to Wyoming and now back to you.” What a beautiful Christmas Present this was.
The next everyday miracle story is from Debbi’s nursing career.
Spirit Directs a Nurse’s Service
Divine energy guides us on how we can help humanity. Whatever your gifts are, and everyone has them, God steers us as to how or what it is we are to do. In my case I served for about 35 years as a nurse, healer, comforter, mainly in the intensive care unit, then as a float nurse for units that needed help, then as a hospital supervisor. During the course of my job, God has allowed me to both participate in and witness many miracles.
Here is an example of one such story I am especially fond of. I had been pulled to the third floor medical floor unit that had a call-off and the beds were full. I had gone to lunch in the cafeteria. On my way back I took the stairs and was walking through the neurological unit on the second floor when the “God job” came through. The voice said, “You need to go to room 206 as there is someone who needs help there.” I told God that I am on the third floor today. But as I came to room 206 I felt a compelling feeling that I needed to go in. As I entered I saw a woman in bed, hospital gown on, arms both lying on the bedspread, staring forward as if she has had a stroke. I spoke to her. Her eyes blinked. That was the only response. Like many times in life we question, “Why am I here?”
I said to her, “I am here for you. How can I help?” Now when we do energy work, I don’t look at things with my eyes or my mind. I look at things with my heart. This is not something you find in a book, in your mind, or by consulting your ego to figure it out. You get quiet and tap into your heart center. So I got absolutely still and waited about two minutes. I then heard her speaking to me with her mind. She said, “I can write and I have been silent for about two years. But my right hand works and I can write.” So I showed her I could hear her by repeating, “You can write?” Then she became excited as she knew I heard her. She said, “Yes, yes, that’s what I want someone to know. Thank you, thank you.” I said, “I will be right back.” I ran to the closest nursing station and grabbed a legal pad and a pen. I propped it up against her right hand and by golly she began to write. I saw a man outside waiting to come in. I said, Lets write something to him.” This is what she wrote, I love you honey- I can speak to you with my writing.” Then I tucked it under the bedding and escorted him in, asking, “Is this your wife?” He said yes. “Well, your wife has something she wants to say. It’s under the sheet near her right hand.” He looked at me in amazement. When he saw his wife’s message, I told him she can use her right hand to write. I then realized it was time for me to go to my department. I kissed her on the forehead and left them, hugging and teary, with a renewed sense of ways to communicate with each other.
You see, her voice had been taken from her due to complications from her disease. With Spirit’s help she was able to find what had been lost. Clairaudience is handy when you’re a nurse.
Debbi and David’s 3rd everyday miracle story involves helping a little bird.
The Many Faces of Friendship
By Deborah Rosales, McHenry, Illinois
Friendships come to us in many different forms. These forms may come in varied ages, colors, personalities, appearances, and energies. But there is one thing that brings it together is the presence of love. That love is the magnetism within, that binds a friend to you. Once it is there, then there is a sense of trust. This is a story of one such friend I was blessed to have. She came in the appearance of a robin. In the morning I would get my coffee and sit outside on my patio. Feeling the inspiration of a new day, seeing the sun brings such joy within my heart. Then I would begin to whistle.
When I did this, my friend would come to me and join me in song. And therein lies the bond. She would perch on my gutter and sing with me for years.
Then one day something peculiar happened. My husband David and I were doing dishes and we saw our little friend quickly fly up to our kitchen window squawking and panicked. We both ran outside and we saw a group of blackbirds attacking her nest. David quickly ran to the tree swinging the dish towel above his head, yelling to scare them away. This event served to give us a deeper bond.
When I took our dog for a walk, she would also go with us flying along above us.
Then one sunny day I had been outside hanging laundry on my clothesline, when mama robin flew out of the sky and landed on the ground in front of me. She then began to act in a most peculiar way.
She was fluttering her wings, bobbing her head back and forth, peeping in a way I previously had never heard. She had a panic type chatter. I stopped and looked down at her, trying to figure out what mama robin was trying to say. Now Mother Nature doesn't speak words but can communicate telepathically with their heart. I looked into her little black eves and intuitively a sense came over me that she wanted me to follow her. She hopped a hop backwards in the grass. Then I took a baby step forward. Again she hopped a small hop back and I advanced a small step. She then turned forward and she hop, hop, hopped in the grass with me slowly following behind. The two of us made quite a pair hopping along down one side of the house, across the driveway to the other side. Midway down she stopped and again began fluttering her wings moving her head back and forth, saying peep, peep, peep.
So I stopped, looked and listened. I then heard a faint little peeping sound coming from my window well. Now a bird doesn't fly vertically like a helicopter, more like a jet plane. I knew it would need help to get out. I told mama robin don't worry I will help.
I ran into my garage and grabbed a rope, and my daughters sand pail. I lowered it down and pushed it on its side.
The little one quickly hopped in and I hoisted up the pail with its precious contents. I laid it on it’s side on the ground and the baby hopped out. Immediately mom and dad flew down to the baby, sniffed it and the three of them flew off together. I felt so proud that my friend trusted me with such an important task.
Debbi and David’s next everyday miracle story is about disaster averted in several ways.
It is Never Too Late
By Debbi Rosales, McHenry, Illinois
It is never too late to reconsider a different course of action. An example of this is a time my husband and I were traveling in our RV Trailer in Florida. We had decided to go to the store to get some batteries. As we started to secure ourselves with our seatbelts, my intuition said, “No, not now, wait.” So I said to my wonderful husband, “No, David, we need to wait. I just don’t think it’s time to go yet.” So he said, “No? Okay, then we can take the dog for another short walk.” After taking him around the block we proceeded on our way. As we approached our destination we came upon an accident that had just happened, a 4 car pile up. The two middle cars were smashed like an accordion. An inner voice told me to go to the second car. As we approached we had witnessed a man passed out, with his car still running. I asked David to reach in and turn off the car from his side and I was on the passenger side. His pulse was thready and he had lost consciousness. So I held his hand and prayed for intervention. Soon he opened his eyes and said, “Who are you?” I told him the ambulance was coming. He asked, “Did I do this?” I told him, “No, but it will take a little time to get you out.” David pointed out we would have been involved in this accident if we wouldn’t have waited to leave. God arranges things perfectly and to follow with your intuition on the timing can be beneficial.
Through their listening to the Divine message, Debbi and David were protected from being involved in the accident and their actions prevented the injured man from having his car explode, so he was able to be rescued. Debbi and David have many more stories of everyday miracles they have been a part of. They want you to understand that they are not unique; you can do this, too. It just involves dedication to your spiritual life, meditating and praying daily, reading scripture and inspiring spiritual books, such as the books of Joseph Goldsmith, a spiritual teacher and healer, and taking the time to tune in and listen to God. As Debbi says, sometimes it is a hunch, and sometimes it is a more direct message. But the key is to pay attention! You, too, can be a conduit for everyday miracles when you pay attention to God. And so it is!
