Reading & Meditation (Who Am I) by Rev. Christine Emmerling, D.D. 9/13/2026

Our reading for today is from the Divine Science Daily Studies by Rev. Vernon Shields, author and founding minister of the First Divine Science Church of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
KNOW THYSELF
We are here, not to ponder the limitations and perplexities of life, but to awaken to our real, limitless nature and to express ourselves at a higher level. In our daily affairs we are to bring more of God’s goodness into expression as greater confidence, courage, love, understanding, tranquility, and inner peace.
Awakened to this truth about himself, Walt Whitman wrote:
“From this hour I ordain myself loos’d of limits and imaginary lines.
I am larger, better than I thought,
I did not know I held so much goodness.”
This basic Truth has been given to mankind over and over by every prophet, seer, and teacher in every age, and yet, it is so often ignored and overlooked. Emerson became aware of this truth about us and emphatically declared, “There are no bounds to the possibilities of man.” And James Allen, stressing this truth in his book, As a Man Thinketh, stated, “The vision that you glorify in your mind, the ideal that you enthrone in your heart—this you will build your life by, this you will become.”
Truly we are to know ourselves—not as what we have been or what we appear to be, but as we are in the Mind of God. We are expressions of the most High, or expressions of God-qualities, right where we are and at our level of understanding. To see ourselves and to know ourselves as we are seen and known by our Source, we must awaken to this fundamental Truth that we are divine and then join spiritual hands with Walt Whitman in proclaiming: “I AM DIVINE, INSIDE AND OUT.”
Meditation
We shall now move into a meditation on who am I. Relax, get comfortable. As we close our eyes let us turn inward to our sacred temple. Now bring our attention to our breath, breathing in the breath of God. Exhaling into a gentle silence. Taking another breath and exhale going deeper within into a focused listening. As I speak to take these words within.
"One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in all of us." from Eph. 4:6.
Omnipresence, God, Infinite Spirit is everywhere present, as all life, all love, all intelligence, all power, all creation. Then this Infinite Spirit, God Presence is living in through and as my very life. Right here and now I am one with God and forever so.
I am a living expression of God. (Repeat)
I am a living expression of the life of God.
I am a living expression of the love of God.
I am a living expression of the Intelligence of God.
I am a living expression of the power of God.
I am a living expression of the creativity of God.
I am a living expression of the goodness of God.
I now relax into the silence.
Thank you, God, for these moments in silent communion of At-One-Ment. Now let us bring our attention back to our breath, to our body, and be fully present.
