New Light on the 93rd Psalm by Rev. Christine Emmerling, D.D. 10/18/26

Today I’m speaking on New Light on the 93rd Psalm. I’m referencing from Joseph Murphy’s Songs of God, writings of Neville Goddard, the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary by Charles Fillmore, and the Aramaic Bible translation by George Lamsa. There are five verses to the 93rd Psalm. Here is the 93rd Psalms is in its entirety:
(1) “The Lord reigns; he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength; wherewith he has girded himself; the world also is established, that it cannot be moved.
(2) Thy throne is established of old; thou art from everlasting.
(3) The rivers are full flowing. O Lord; the rivers have lifted up their voice; the rivers are flowing with purity.
(4) The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yes, than the mighty waves of the sea.
(5) Your testimonies are very sure; holiness becomes your house, O Lord, for ever.”
We shall now look at this Psalm metaphysically by verse:
(1) “The Lord reigns; he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength; wherewith he has girded himself; the world also is established, that it cannot be moved.
The Lord means the I AM, the Christ within, which is the Presence of God individualized within us all. Because of the power of our I AM it is our strong protector. But this Presence is not an outside force; it is all that we know God to be in consciousness, and the knowledge that the inner Lord is also God of all mankind.
The word “world” means the creative thought manifested, a reflection of our habitual thinking and imagery. When we are in our rightful I Am or Christ mind we have dominion of our world; dominion of our thoughts and feelings; and dominion of our destiny.
The whole world is God made manifest, for there is only God - the Living Spirit Almighty – and It is omnipresent, God everywhere present; Omnipotence, God is all power; Omniscience, God is all knowledge. This same presence, power and knowledge of God is individualized within everyone and is the Christ within us. Everything is within the Mind of God. There is nothing outside of God.
(2) Thy throne is established of old; thou art from everlasting.
A throne symbolizes divine authority, leadership, justice, wisdom, honor, and responsibility. Metaphysically a “throne” is our true divine inheritance as a spiritual being made in the image and likeness of God. “Established of old” means it has always been part of our spiritual self. From “everlasting” means our spiritual self is without end, being eternal.
(3) The rivers are full flowing. O Lord; the rivers have lifted up their voice; the rivers are flowing with purity.
The “rivers” are channels for expressing spiritual ideas and thoughts. Here we have an endless flow of rushing of ideas and inspiration from the one Infinite source. When we connect with the Divine within, our river of life, inspiration and ideas flow through us to be brought forth into creative expression in the manifest world.
Metaphysically, purity is not limited to physical cleanliness or moral behavior; it is a state of inner refinement and spiritual alignment. It involves freedom from negative thoughts, selfish desires, and moral impurities, allowing one to cultivate virtues such as unconditional love, compassion, humility, and integrity. Purity is a condition of the mind and soul, reflecting harmony in living spiritual laws and Divine Principles.
(4) The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yes, than the mighty waves of the sea.
Metaphysically, this represents the overwhelming authority of the divine voice, which commands attention and cannot be ignored. It suggests that God’s words carry an inherent power to move, transform, and align the listener’s will.
The “noise” represents all our doubts and fears, the internal mind chatter that take over our emotional state of mind. The mighty waves of the sea represents the storms of life — emotional, spiritual, or circumstantial — that can feel overwhelming. Just as the sea can be “raging” and “uncontrollable”, human experiences can be chaotic and unpredictable. The “mightiness” of the waves underscores the intensity of these challenges, while also hinting at their transient nature. God within us is mightier than all the fearful thoughts we carry within us, and can transform any condition.
(5) Your testimonies are very sure; holiness becomes your house, O Lord, for ever.”
Metaphysically a house is a person’s body, our vessel and holy temple. Our spiritual practices, beliefs, thoughts and actions make for a holy temple. Christ takes its place within as our conscious self ruling over our subconscious thoughts, emotions and beliefs forever.
This 93rd Psalm reminds me of the story in Mark 4:35-39. This story begins after Jesus having been teaching from a boat on the sea. Being evening Jesus tells the disciples “Let us cross over to the landing place.” And they left the people, and took him away while he was in the boat. And there were other boats of people out with them. And there arose a heavy storm and wind, and the waves kept beating into the boat, so that the boat was nearly filled.
But Jesus was sleeping on a blanket in the stern of the boat; and they came and roused him and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? So he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” And the wind quieted down, and there was a great calm. And he said to them, “Why are you so fearful? And why do you have no faith?” And they were exceedingly afraid, and said to each other, “Oh, who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Now for the metaphysical interpretation of this story as it means for our soul’s development. Symbolically the boat represents our soul’s body and all that it contains; our thoughts, feelings, and emotions; it is our living vessel.
The disciples represent our 12 powers centers; faith, will, understanding, imagination, zeal, power, love, wisdom, order, strength, elimination, and life, and when these powers are all awakened and realized, out of which comes the Christ consciousness.
They are crossing a body of water; a body of water such as a sea, ocean, or lake represents our subconscious mind of thoughts emotions. This crossing a body of water represents a change in consciousness. This change of consciousness is the Christ at sleep.
This body of water is the subconscious mind that is filled with all kinds of thoughts and beliefs. The windy storm represents energy that has stirred up negative thoughts and emotions from the depths of the subconscious mind. Negative thoughts release fearful emotions that overwhelm us, and we forget all that we have learned about spiritual law.
Thus our 12 power centers, instead of being active and balanced within, have become focused on the appearance world full of fear. Jesus being asleep means we are no longer consciously connected to our Christ Mind. Our disciples, our faculties of mind when challenged, quickly forgot to put to practice what they knew as Truth Principle. In crisis they remembered to go and awaken the Christ within.
When troubled we are reminded to go to our inner teacher, our Christ Self, and awaken that part of our self. In awakening to our Christ Self, we realize the nothingness of the appearance, the non power of the negative thoughts and fearful emotions. The Christ within declares “Peace be still.” And the Light of Truth is revealed, and once again all is calm.
Where is this storm but within us, within our consciousness and the collective consciousness - all the other boats of people in this world with us. But our experience depends upon how we respond to it. We can go around like Chicken Little crying “The sky is falling” at every little thing that happens. And, then when the “big one” happens just emotionally fall apart and become useless. When we seek inwardly to calm our inner self then collectively our faculties of mind come together and the Christ within us awakens. Our inner Christ becomes the power to transform the difficulties in our life.
It is so important to have our daily dose of God. Meaning to take time everyday to acknowledge the Divine Presence; we go silently within through prayer or meditation, do inspirational reading and put to practice what we do know. Divine Science has wonderful tools to prepare ourselves for those difficult times when they do come, or should I say opportunities for exercising our spiritual muscles.
Over the years, I have experienced a few hurricanes while on vacation in Mexico. The last being in 2024. When a sign of fear would bubble up, I remembered the words Jesus’ spoke to the windy storm, “Peace be still.” I repeated until I felt the storm within me became still, and eventually the one outdoors became just as calm.
Let us take a moment now to lift our consciousness to be that light unto the world. Get comfortable. Take a few deep breaths. As I say these words repeat them within for yourself.
I breathe in peace...
Peace be unto me, a peace beyond the worldly senses. Peace... Peace...
The presence of God is right here and now. I turn within and open my mind and heart to this Divine Presence. I release all sense of separation. I let go of any and all beliefs, ideals and differences that cause me to separate myself from other people, and to judge.
I am one in God...
One with all life...
and all life is one with God. Holy Divine! What is true of me, is therefore true of everyone and all life. Love Is Now! No matter what love is here now!
I choose to see love...
I choose to experience love...
I choose to be love now...
Love I am.
silence....
Praise God from whom all blessings flow. I accept and embrace my good now. My heart is full. Thank you God, and so it is.
