New Light on the 24th Psalm by Rev. Christine Emmerling, D.D. 9/20/2026

My topic this week is “New Light on the 24th Psalm. Today I’m giving a metaphysical interpretation of the 24th Psalm. I’ll be referencing Joseph Murphy’s book Songs of God, Charles Fillmore Metaphysical Bible Dictionary, and the Bible translated from Aramaic by George H. Lamsa. There are 10 verses to this Psalm. Here it is in its entirety:

(1-2) “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he has set the foundation thereof in the sea, and has furnished with rivers.

(3-4) Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not sworn by his soul falsely, nor taken an oath deceitfully.

(5-6) He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from God our savior. This is the generation of them that seek your face, that proclaim your countenance, O thou God of Jacob.

(7-8) Lift up your heads, O you gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, and the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

(9-10) Lift up your heads, O your heads, O you gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory forever.”

To me this psalm is a beautiful introduction to prayer. We are reminded that this is a song about our soul, our inner consciousness. I shall now interpret by verse.

Verse 1: “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

The word “earth” represents all external manifestation, our body, home, profession, wealth, health, and all things of this three-dimensional plane. Earth is a living symbol of our embodied self, the vessel through which we experience and manifest consciousness.

We find in the New Testament there is a similar verse in Matt. 6:10: “Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven so on earth.” Meaning as in our consciousness it is also manifested in the physical.

The word “Lord” is another word for God. Also, can mean the I Am That I Am, the I Am within, God within, Mind of God, or the Christ within.

The word “world” means the creative thought manifested, a reflection of our habitual thinking and imagery. We have dominion over our world. Our thought and feeling control our experiences and destiny.

The whole world is God made manifest, for there is only God - the Living Spirit Almighty – and It is omnipresent. This Omnipresent God is individualized within everyone and is the Christ within us. Everything is within the Mind of God. There is nothing outside of God.

Verse 2, “For he has set the foundation thereof in the sea, and has furnished with rivers.”

The term “sea” represents God as Universal Mind; that great realm of unexpressed and unformed thoughts and ideas that contains all potentiality. The “rivers” are channels for expressing those ideas and thoughts. Here we have an endless flow of rushing of ideas and inspiration from the one Infinite source. When we connect with the Divine within, our river of life, inspiration and ideas flow through us into creative expression.

Verse 3-4: “Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not sworn by his soul falsely, nor taken an oath deceitfully.”

We begin with a question and then we have the answer. The word “mountain” represents our inner holy temple, that quiet place within us. A holy place means spiritual consciousness. This is about going into prayer or meditation and rising above our mundane thoughts into a deep silence in communion. Our holy temple is the Christ within us.

Having clean hands and pure heart is about the intentions we bring with us while entering prayer or meditation. We cannot take our emotional or worldly concerns into our sacred time. Our consciousness must match the vibrational frequency we are desiring. We are to have only the desire to connect, commune and be one with God. Therefore, we must put aside all our problems and be fully present in a quiet listening state of mind.

Verse 5: “He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from God our savior.”

The word “blessing” means all that is good. It may come in many forms. As in the attributes and qualities of God; health, peace, love, joy, power, abundance, wisdom and knowledge. We receive inspiration from on high. We receive new ideas and guidance to bring forth into our manifest world of experience. We have new knowledge, wisdom and understanding of God.

The word “righteousness” means right use, to use rightly. We receive the wisdom from God to use our blessing for good.

Verse 6: “This is the generation of them that seek your face, that proclaim your countenance, O thou God of Jacob.”

The word “generation” means this is the time, today, right here and now. To seek your face is to seek Truth, to know your true self and be free. Jacob wrestled all night, to receive his blessing in forgiveness - to be free from his past actions. Once realized, his blessing was a change in name to Israel.

Name means nature of, and so Jacob’s nature was forever changed from being mental; the supplanter of his instinctual nature. Once his name became Israel, meant his nature was integrated and elevated to a high degree of spiritual consciousness. The knowing of the Omnipresent God.

We have a matching verse in Matt. 5:8, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

Verse 7-10: “Lift up your heads, O you gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, and the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O your heads, O you gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory forever.”

The word “head” means our mind, thoughts or consciousness. The word “gates” are the senses; external and internal. The words “everlasting doors” are an open entrance for higher consciousness. Let every aspect of our being be totally present in the here and now with the one desire to know the one true God.

The word “King” means righteous– a king is the executive faculty in every person whose life is guided, governed, and directed by Spirit. The “King of glory” represents our highest level of consciousness, our Christ mind or God consciousness. Lord of hosts means the God or Creator of the universe and beyond.

Now from our soul’s view: the 24th Psalm is about meditation and prayer. Infinite Spirit, living God, is expressing our body, home, profession, wealth, health, and all things of this three-dimensional plane. Our external world is a reflection of our habitual thinking, beliefs and imagery. We have the dominion over our world. Whether we know the Law, or how it works or not doesn’t matter, for the Law is in place. On this plane of life, everything is experienced from the inside out. We create within us, project it into our world and then experience it in our life.

We can open our mind to Divine Intelligence, and through creative law receive an inpouring of inspired ideas. Our sole intent and purpose of prayer and meditation is At-One-Ment, being one with God in mind, body and soul.

We are now ready to lift our consciousness, shifting our attention from the physical realm of life, from all our problems and mundane thoughts. We keep our mind on the attributes and qualities of God, and identify ourselves with these same God attributes and qualities. When we begin to contemplate that God is all life, boundless love, absolute peace, perfect harmony, infinite wisdom and all-power and Infinite Intelligence we are climbing the hill, ascending in consciousness into the mountain.

Now God’s rivers of life, peace and love flows through us as we contemplate upon the great Truths of the Infinite Presence. We are in the secret place of the most high, and have a sense of oneness with Infinite Spirit, and Divine inspiration of ideas flows through our thoughts.

Once we have prepared our consciousness we pause in silence, in a quiet listening state of mind to hear the still small voice within. We then wait with an open receptive consciousness for that silent communion with Christ as God individualized within us.

We let our consciousness continue to bath in this Infinite Presence going even deeper. Jesus said that “We must be ready, for we shall not know of the day or time when the bridegroom will appear.” The integration of the body, mind and soul totally lifted into Christ or Cosmic consciousness - total awareness of the all in all.

During this state of silence, the Christ goes before us to make the crooked roads straight. Meaning to transform our seeming problems into the nothingness from which they came.

Then when our silence comes to an end, we are in full gratitude for all that we have received and for that which is to come. Blessings flow forth into our manifest world, and we get to experience them in our daily lives.

I’ll close with this story shared by Joseph Murphy. A man who was experiencing cancer which had spread was considered inoperable. His favorite Psalm was the 24th, and he began to pray out loud, as follows: “The King of Glory shall come in, strong and mighty, to heal and restore my whole being. God is the King of Glory, and I rejoice and give thanks for the miraculous healing taking place now.” He said that he began to sing these words several times a day, particularly prior to sleep. He was lifted to a high state of consciousness, and he was surrounded by a blaze of light, so he knew he was healed. Subsequent tests confirmed his wholeness and perfect healing.
